Sinus headaches, contact points, surgery

Iranian physicians published a report on “contact point” headaches in the last issue of the journal Headache. When the nasal septum is severely deviated it can result in a contact between the septum which is in the middle of the nose and the side wall of the nasal cavity. This contact point appears to cause headaches, at least in some patients.

Putting numbing drops (lidocaine) into the area of contact usually stops the headache and confirms the diagnosis. The aim of the Iranian study was to evaluate the effectiveness of surgery in treating contact point headaches. Thirty-six patients with chronic headaches who had not previously responded to conventional treatments were enrolled and had an overall success rate of 83%, while the complete cure rate was 11%. Dr. F. Behin of New Jersey has also previously reported that removing the contact point often results in headache relief.
