Occipital nerve block for headaches
Some patients with a severe acute headache do not respond to over-the-counter or prescription medications. Many of them can benefit from an occipital nerve block, particularly if the pain is in the back of the head.
An injection of lidocaine (novocaine) in the back of the head, where the occipital nerve is located is a simple procedure and can provide quick relief. Obviously, this is not a practical treatment for frequent headaches because the effect of a nerve block usually does not last. However, if the nerve block works, there is a good chance that Botox injections will also work and the relief can last for 3 months.
