Mindfulness and pain
The relationship between persistent pain and mindfulness (or as scientists define it, self-directed, non-reactive awareness of present-moment experience) was examined in 104 chronic pain patients in Australia.
Pain intensity, negative affect, pain catastrophizing, pain-related fear, pain hypervigilance, and functional disability were measured. Two scientific measures of mindfulness were also used, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and the Five-Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire. Results showed that patients with low mindfulness had significantly higher scores of all five measures of pain. This is the first clear evidence substantiating the strong link between mindfulness and pain. The study provides scientific support to the benefits of mindfulness training in the treatment of pain, including headaches.
