Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex™

The Birth of Migralex

For years, Dr. Mauskop’s busy center was filled with headache patients who came to see him over and over again. Like many other neurologists, he routinely prescribed the latest headache medicines. But Dr. Mauskop was very concerned about the side effects of these drugs, knowing they could be worse than the problem they were supposed to relieve. And, of course, the drugs didn’t necessarily help everyone.

He was determined to find a better solution. Dr. Mauskop searched the medical literature, consulted his colleagues and spoke to his patients, and by the early 1990s he found himself immersed in the study of vitamins and minerals as potential headache treatments that were as safe as they were effective.

Headaches are often caused by the inappropriate contraction or expansion of the blood vessels in the brain. There are many theories as to what brings about this “squeezing” or “widening.” Hormones like serotonin, minerals like calcium or magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids such as tyramine all appear to play roles in this process. But which ones are key? After conducting numerous clinical studies involving hundreds of patients published in prestigious medical journals, Dr. Mauskop demonstrated that magnesium was extremely important to blood vessel regulation.

This mineral not only helps regulate the width of the blood vessels, but also helps them respond to other chemicals that keep them from expanding or contracting at the wrong time. Another piece of the puzzle involved the neurotransmitter serotonin. When magnesium is in short supply, serotonin levels are not properly regulated. As a result, the blood vessels may not be able to retain their proper width, and inflammation may set in, setting the stage for a major headache.

The Science

By the early 1990s it seemed clear that low levels of magnesium in the blood were linked to several types of headaches. However, while some studies supported this idea, others did not. The confusion was caused by the fact that there are two forms of magnesium in the body. One is inactive because it’s bound to other substances. The other, known as ionized magnesium or “free” magnesium, is active because it’s not bound. Back then, scientists could measure only the total magnesium level in the blood, which was a combination of the bound and “free” types.

Determined not to let this technical shortcoming stop them, Dr. Mauskop and world-renowned scientists Drs. Burton and Bella Altura conducted ground-breaking research demonstrating that total magnesium levels were far less important to the genesis of headaches than levels of “free” magnesium. This was a first step in figuring out who would be most likely to benefit from magnesium.

New testing techniques

By 1992, new laboratory techniques made it possible to measure the “free” magnesium levels in the blood. These new techniques could also determine the ratio between “free” magnesium and a form of calcium called serum ionized calcium. The balance between these two minerals is important. While magnesium helps muscles relax, calcium does just the opposite, stimulating the muscles and encouraging them to contract. Too much calcium relative to “free” magnesium can produce headaches.

Using these new techniques in his breakthrough study of headaches and magnesium, Dr. Mauskop found that all of the study participants had normal levels of total magnesium in their blood. But almost half of them had low levels of “free” magnesium, plus an elevated ratio of calcium to “free” magnesium. The results helped to steer Dr. Mauskop in an exciting new direction.

Blinded study proves high efficacy

By the mid 1990s, a series of studies conducted by Dr. Mauskop had proven conclusively that a lack of “free” magnesium was a factor in many kinds of headaches. The next step was to determine whether giving an infusion of magnesium could help eliminate those headaches. In a blinded study, 88 percent of those deficient in magnesium who received this infusion experienced dramatic relief from their headaches.

Dr. Mauskop and other researchers then performed additional studies, all of which found that many headache sufferers had low levels of “free” magnesium, and that taking magnesium (intravenously or orally) offered significant relief.

Patented and Introduced to the Public

Combining his years of experience in treating headaches with the results of the latest headache and magnesium research, Dr. Mauskop developed a unique headache pain reliever called Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex™. Made up of a special magnesium formula combined with a proven, highly effective pain reliever, Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex™ delivers a one-two punch that knocks out headaches. And it does so with minimal or no side effects.

When Dr. Mauskop began offering Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex™ to his patients, they responded with enthusiastic accolades and heartfelt testimonials about how much it improved their lives. Their reactions convinced Dr. Mauskop to introduce Dr. Mauskop’s Migralex™ to the public, so it could bring much-needed relief to headache sufferers everywhere.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are taking a prescription drug for anticoagulation (thinning the blood), diabetes, gout, arthritis.

Stop use or ask a doctor if allergic reaction occurs. Seek medical help right away or if pain gets worse or lasts for more than 10 days, new symptoms occur, fever gets worse or lasts for more than 3 days, ringing in the ears or a loss of hearing occurs, redness or swelling is present.
