Exertion Headache
Exertional headaches are a group of headache syndromes, which are associated with some physical activity. These headaches usually become severe very quickly after strenuous activity such as weight lifting or sexual intercourse. In fact, subtypes of exertional headache are cough headache and laughter headache, as well as the lifting headache.
Activities that can precipitate these headaches include running, coughing, sneezing and sexual intercourse. Symptoms are a throbbing, sharp pain that can last for minutes or hours.
These headaches can sometimes be prevented by taking anti-inflammatory drugs (such as aspirin) before engaging in physical activity.
Since the sudden onset of any headache symptom could signal a dangerous underlying cause, it’s important to seek medical advice if the headache persists or occurs for the first time.
