Daily frustartion, ability to cope and headaches
Dutch researchers followed 89 adolescents, 13-21 years of age, and discovered that daily frustration of goal pursuits was related to the same day or next day headaches. They also discovered that the extent to which adolescents believe in their ability to cope also influenced their experience of subsequent headache. Specific coping strategies did not seem to matter, but the belief in the ability to cope reduced the chance of developing a headache.
This study was published in the latest issue of Headache. It is clear that stress is a big factor in triggering headaches – whether it is caused by unfair teachers (see an earlier post), daily frustrations, or other stressors. It appears that teaching specific coping techniques may not be as important as instilling a strong belief in the ability to cope with whatever stressful event may occur in life. Although it is possible that teaching any coping strategies may lead to this belief.
