Aspartame and headaches
Aspartame (NutraSweet) was approved by the FDA in 1981 after many years of controversy about its ability to cause cancer and other medical problems. Many large studies have convincingly proven that aspartame is very safe. Controversy still exists about its ability to cause headaches because scientific evidence is not clear.
One study found that people prone to headaches had more headaches when given aspartame than when given a placebo, but another one found that there was no difference. Common sense suggests that aspartame probably triggers headaches in some people but not in other. If it is not obvious, to find out if aspartame is a trigger for you, keep a diary where you record your headaches and the amount of aspartame you consume. Keeping a detailed diary can be helpful in discovering other triggers as well.
